Big Thank you to Mr Adam Muir (Our Lecturer)

I want wanna say a big big thank you to Mr Adam Muir my lecturer for New Communications technology. Throughout this course I have learned a lot of things that I did not know.

I now know how to create a blog as well as making my own videos. This is wonderful.
All these was possible because of Mr Muir and hopefully he will be remembered in Sudan
because I am definitely gonna talk about the person who taught me how to do so many things
on the internet.

I appreciate all the efforts he put in making the course interesting for all of us. At first, I thought this course was boring but Mr Muir proved me wrong.

May the almighty God bless you in your endeavors. Cheers.

Jason Nelson Art Works.

After logging into Jason's art works website, I was absolutely confused. I did not comprehend some of the logic behind the different art works that he invented so far. In essence, they were complicated to understand in my view. However, after spending sometime looking and analyzing them critically, I came to realize that some of the artworks are not all weird as i had previously thought. In fact some of the images I found had music nice music and as I clicked the mouse on the image, poetry appears and that made feel a sense of Digital Art Poetry.

I looked at three different artworks of Jason Nelson and they are as illustrated below.

A). Alarmingly these are not lovesick zombies. This game had a disturbing images. And the concept of this is that one had to shoot the zombies and advance to the next level. I went up to level 3 and it got really tough so i couldn't go further. Overall, I liked this game and I would like to play it again.

B). Genetic Code (Play 7). This creation had colorful blocks with text written on them.the blocks move in a 3D Circle after when I clicked the mouse around the blocks. As they blocks move around, they wobble and change colors which was interesting but looks more of kiddish things. an adult like myself is like to get bored in in just a minute but a kid would be happy to play all day long because of its artistic nature.

C). This is/isn't a pandemic flu. this was about how individuals are so upright in regards to pandemics and epidemics. The scenario is that Jason dispenses the flu to the audience and in a series of uncomfortable pictures or images, phrases and audio freak them out.

So in my conclusion about Jason's Artistic works, I think they are great because they make me feel and imagine the idea behind such works and attempt to relate them to our physical environment.

Task 9. Personal Media Inventory and all the Media in my Life.

From the moment I wake up early in the morning, I usually go to brush my teeth and take a quick bath first. Once I come back to my room, I turn my laptop on. I log into face book to check if there is any message or friend requests that need my confirmation. If I find any, I will confirm and read the messages and reply.

After that, I head to the kitchen to  prepare myself breakfast such as scrambled eggs or sandwiches. If I have lectures to attend, I will leave the house 10 minutes before the lecture commences because my house is 5 minutes away from the uni.

When I complete my all my classes, I then go to the  uni library and listen to online music videos or news. Most of the news I pay attention is on US politics, Australia, Asia and my country Southern Sudan. The following are the websites I usually visit. http://www.sudantribune.com/http://www.foreignpolicy.com/issues/currenthttp://www.globalsecurity.org/military/index.html plus the Australian government website (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade).

Upon coming back from uni, I sometimes make myself lunch or just go to sleep and have a good rest. when I wake up, I will turn skype on and begin video chatting with my friends and family. After that, I will begin reading my lecture slides or weekly readings. And the last thing I do at the end of the day is take another shower and eat my dinner and then sleep. This repeats itself. Weekends I spend it working on my assignments.

To analyse this inventory, I can see that technology and the media are really having huge impact in my life and probably other people's lives as well. Listening to music online, news and communicating with family and friends using social media such as face book and skype dominate most of my life. This means that the media has and continue to change the way we live and interact in the greater society. And as such culture is changing is being affected quite significantly. This is why some scholars refer to technology as one factor that is eradicating the cultures of different societies. And what gets me worried is the ever changing changing nature of technology and media. How will it affect society?  The question is yet to be answered as we await tremendous changes technology wise.

All the Media in My Life.

a). Face book
b).Newspaper
c).Television
d).Yahoo
e). Google
f).Online news (youtube)
g).Catalogue
h).Computer
i).skype
j).Mobile phone

Political Participation

In terms of political participation, I actually participated in mobilizing the Southern Sudanese here in Qld to vote for the referendum that was conducted on the 9th Jan, 2011 at Brisbane Convention Center.

In order to understand what the referendum is about, I would like to give some context to help understand why it was necessary to participate in the first place.
The Southern Sudan back in 2005 9th Jan signed a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with the ruling government of the Sudan the National Congress Party (NCP) putting an end to a two decade brutal civil war that claimed more than 2 million lives.

In that Agreement, the Southern Sudanese had two options. To vote for unity or secession in a referendum after a six year period (9th Jan 2011). In this context, myself just like any other Southern Sudanese were heavily campaigning for the southerners to vote for secession because of our bitter history with the Sudan government. Since independence in 1956, we were being marginalized, oppressed and discriminated on racial grounds and as such, I saw that was no need to maintain unity with such an oppressive regime.

To this effect, we spoke to people in churches and social gatherings about the importance of independence from the Sudan government.  I even joined a a political website known as "Sudan Tribune" to participate on forums and articles published on the general political, economic, cultural and social situation of the country.

I believe this sums up my political participation part.

Continuation of Task 7.

I had not completed two questions of the 7th tutorial Task so I have decided to finish them.
firstly, I'm writing about the revolution in warfare.

In one of the readings titled FCJ-004 The Military-Entertainment Complex: A New facet of Information Warfare." This is an extremely exciting topic I found reading. warfare has changed and is continuing to change significantly due to changing the complex nature of threats in the 21st century. This change in military warfare is also known as Informationisation in modern warfare. The use of technology to manufacture advanced military weapons, air capacity, long range missiles and defensive mechanisms from aerial attacks.

With warfare being treated as entertainment, countries are now beginning to invest in technological  warfare approaches. Countries like China is now heavily engaging and bringing its military and defense capacity to realizing the importance of modernizing its army, airforce, navy and marine. This is all because of how the Americans handled the Iraq war of 2003. Iraq was hit by technological weapons on key military installations that weakened their military strength before too long.

This article really made me to realise the importance of internet not only on our daily life but of its strategic importance to the defense industry and security.

The last question our lecturer asked was our views on governments plan to censor the internet and perhaps its effect on democracy.

My view on internet censorship is straight forward. the government's plan to censor the internet would be a violation of democratic principles. If the principles of democracy is the freedom to move, freedom to assembly, freedom to worship and freedom to speak, there is no reason the government should act contrary to this principles. First of all, the internet is the mostly used media of communication. In essence, the internet is the voice of those who are voiceless. Any Australian can speak what they want to speak about their government and this is what democracy is all about.

I acknowledge the fact that the government is concerned is concerned about the misuse of the internet by some individuals but I still don't think censoring the internet is viable solution. Censoring would be infringing on the rights of the Australian people. If the government intends to protect children from accessing wrong websites on the internet, they should should maybe allow internet companies put tighter restrictions for children wanting to access particular websites that are pornographic in nature.

one dangerous aspect of censoring the internet is that politicians will surely exploit this to their advantage. They will deliberately choose not to disclose important information to their constituencies or electorates. This can be in terms of policy etc.

Politics and the Internet

The tutorial task for today demands all New Communication Technology students to subscribe to the prescribed political directions below without having to change once own political beliefs or convictions.

1. Sign an "e-petition."

To this effect, I have subscribed to the Qld parliament E-Petition Stricter laws governing sentencing for cruelty to animals. This is only for Qld residents so if anyone is interested to become of this wonderful peition, you're more than welcome to join up by visiting the website I have illustrated below.
https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/view/EPetitions_qld/Confirmation.aspx?PetNum=1600&lIndex=-1

2. Respond to a professional blogger at a major news site.

The CNN sportblog posted an artical on its blogsite titled An ominous sign ahead of the 2022 World Cup? In this article, I responded by saying the following about the possibility of southern sudan hosting the world world cup and also made some comments aboout Iran and Iraq as follows:

"Football is an awesome game. It can bring rivals toggether just like it has brought Iran and Iraq in this game. Now if these two countries were to work together as friends politically, the Middle East would be enjoying much peace than it is right now. Four (4) world cups from the next one, Southern Sudan maybe aspiring to host the world cup too. The finalists will be North Sudan Vs South Sudan and the winner will be S.Sudan. S.Sudan oyee!!!" You can find my comment on this website.

3. What is Barrack Obama up to today?

In this question, I define "up to today"  in the context of his current political polices in general not in the context of private activity he is doing today.
Therefore I've decided to outline briefly some of Obama's current policies he is pursuing today. They are as follow.
a). Dismantle disrupt and deny alqaeda safe heavens in Afghanistan, pakistan from ploting terrorist attacks on the US and its allies.
b). Attempting to prevent North korea from developing more nuclear weapons hoping that North Korea will abdone its nuclear program.
c) Just on the 27th this month, Obama laid down some new ideas for securing the future of the US by leading in the areas of innovation. In his state of the Union address to congress, he mentioned that the US need to invest in science and tecnology. Fast intenet that will attarct investors to do business and create jobs in the United states. http://www.whitehouse.gov/state-of-the-union-2011

4. Find out who your local, state and federal representatives are.
As much as I would like to answer this question, I regret to mention that am an international student so I am not really sure whether I have a representative here. If my country Sudan could publish such information online like here in australia, I would be more than happy to write it however, it is not the case. There is significant censorship  being excercised in the Sudan.

5.  Let your local member know what you think about their last speech.
 Look above.

Tutorial Task 6: Searching on the Internet.

The subject for todays tutorial task is "searching on the internet." Our Lecturer Adam Muir gave this task to allow us learn how to research information on the internet without using Google. I beleive it was a tremendous idea inasmuch as researching professionally is concerned. I have done my research based on the list of questions the lecturer wanted us to answer. Below are the ansers I found on the websites indicated below the answers.

Question 1. What is the weight of the world's biggest machine? How much did it cost to build?
Answer: The world's biggest machine is known as the Krupp digging machine. It weighs 45,500 tons. Its costs was $100 million.

Obama's emergence and challenges as president

Tutorial 4: Social media and privacy (Facebook)

My understanding of facebook as a social networking site is that when one signs up with facebook, one has to provide his/her name, email address, gender and birth date. After successful registration, one can connect with friends and friends of friends. However, to connect, one would have to add them as friends by sending  requests for confirmation. If the the person acknowledges the friend request, then he/she may confirm if he/she chooses to do so. And if the people you send them friend requests and they decline your request oftenly, then facebook will notify the sender to stop sending people requests for a number of days because they believe the sender might be harrassing other people.

This policy I beleive is silly. Facebook has to let people interact freely without interferring with what they do as adults. For example, if you send someone a friend requestn and he/she declines, facebook should not assume that one might have engaged in some form of harrassment.

Another meaningless privacy policy is when you restrict access to friends only. Friends of friends can still have access to your facebook profile information. They can view your pictures, status, and even watch videos if there is any. It is in this context that I perceive this policy as meaningless because it is not consistent with what facebook private policy states.

Thirdly, Facebook has a privacy policy of giving other people one's email address so that they can connect more easily. This is good and bad at the same time. The positive aspect is that people can easily find and connect with old mates and family without having to worry where to find them if they are on facebook. On the otherhand, it is not appropriate to give other people someone's email so that they can add and connect, The question is; what about if one does not feel comfortable  to connect with other people they have had terrible life experience with?  Facebook has got to find a better policy instead of giving peoples contacts without their consent.

Overall, I would say that facebook is a great social networking site that connects people with friends and family across the globe. It is free and probably one of the best way one can connect and find out about their friends in other countries. However, facebook has got to restrict small children under 13 years of age from joing the site. Their current policy does not have a mechanism to regulate children from joing facebook.

They also need to make sure they stop giving other people other people's information without their consent.

Something about myself.

My name is Nawadi Phillip Gordon. A student of International Relations at Bond University. Currently, I'm doing summer course at Griffith. I like to engage in politiclal discussions with people that are politically motivated.

I like to find out more about other people's culture and their views of the society they live in. By this, I find it easier to interact and socialise with people from distinct backgrounds after knowing what their culture is like.

Before I conclude, I would to give my sincere appreciation to the New communications lecturer Mr Aadm Muir who taught me to create a blog of my own. With the blog, I believe I will make more friends online since we shall be exchanging information and learning from one another.

Tutorial Day 3 Task: Bulletin Board System (BBS)

Definition:
A bulletin board system (BBS) is a computer or an application dedicated to the sharing or exchange of messages or other files on a network. Originally an electronic version of the type of bulletin board found on the wall in many kitchens and work places, the BBS was used to post simple messages between users. The BBS became the primary kind of online community through the 1980s and early 1990s, before the World Wide Web arrived. (Ding and Lui, 2010, p. 245)

Most BBSes are devoted to a particular subject, although some are more general in nature. Among special interests represented on BBSes are dentistry, law, guns, multi-player games, Druidic practices, and information for the disabled. A significant number of BBS sites offer "adult-oriented" chat and images that can be downloaded. The BBS is often free, although some charge a membership or use fee. Many BBSes have Web sites, and many Internet access providers have bulletin board systems from which new Internet users can download the necessary software to get connected. The BBS has its own culture and jargon. For example, a sysop is the person who runs the site. Online chat became widely popular through the BBS and many chart acronyms started there. (Lee G and lee W, 2010)

As the use of the Internet became more widespread in the mid to late 1990s, traditional BBSes rapidly faded in popularity. Today, internet occupy much of the same social and technological space as BBSes did, and the term BBS is often used to refer to any online forum or message board.

Internet and military connectivity (my Perspective)

It was very interesting to note that the internet is approximately forty years old with its origin in the US military. The internet since its inception is still significantly being used in the defense industry and department. It is used for manufacturing and designingof weapons and amunitions as well as aircrafts.

Intelligence agencies today are able to access necessary and valuable information on national security issues because of the dicovery of the internet in the military. Based on this fact, one can say that the discovery of internet is saving human lives because government agencies use the internet to detect plots and terrorists activities.
